De platbuik is een libel die als ‘pionier’ bestempeld wordt. Het is één van de eerste libellensoorten die bij nieuwe vijver kan gevonden worden.
Als je ze eenmaal gezien hebt, zijn ze vaak niet moeilijk om te fotograferen, omdat ze wel regelmatig van hun rustplek opvliegen, maar na een klein rondje toch weer op hetzelfde plekje terugkeren. Mannetje en vrouwtje zijn makkelijk herkenbaar en vlot van elkaar te onderscheiden: Mevrouw heeft een goud-brokanten japon aan, mijnheer heeft een blauw-berijpt achterlijf. (En wat poseren die beestjes attent voor een bijpassende achtergrond!)

The Broad-bodied chaser is a dragonfly that is often called a pioneer, as it is one of the first dragonflies/damselflies you can find near new ponds.
When you have spotted them, they are not difficult to photograph, as they tend to return to the same spot over and over again. The lady on the picture here, was sitting in my front yard for more than an hour, with only brief interuptions for a short flight over the border.
This dragonfly is very easy to identify, both males and females. The lady is wearing gold brocate, while the male one has a blue abdomen. (And I must say that I do appreciate the background they choose for their portraits!)
