I grew up in a leafy suburb north of London and a huge ancient oak in the garden. A long swing hung from it and the grey squirrels raced each other round and all over it.

Buying land is definitely the best way to preserve it — good going!

Distressed to learn the Q. rubra is an invasive species there. It’s one of the major species here on the mountain (central Pennsylvania), and one of my favorites.

@Curbstone Valley: I don’t know the Californian oak (Quercus agrifolia?), but we do have ‘American oaks’ (Quercus rubra) here. They behave as an invasive species, and don’t have the same ‘stateliness’ as our native oaks.

I love English Oaks, and miss them. When I was a child in England we had a magnificent old English Oak at the bottom of our garden. Our California oaks here always seem to me like poor scraggly relations. I’m so glad that this beautiful oak is now safe with you. What a wonderful story!

whow, schitterend ziet dat uit met die bomen daar. Het huis zie je van die kant straks helemaal niet meer staan als de bladeren weer aan de bomen zitten. En een stuk grond kopen om een eik te redden, dat zullen er niet veel doen…
