Candlemas
‘On candlemas, the day has gained an hour of sunlight’… That was what I was told in the past.
But you know, I always want such a statement prooved!
Here in Belgium, on the 21st of December, sun rose at 8.45 AM, and sunset was around 4.28 PM, so we had 7 hours and 43 minutes of daylight.
Today, on Candlemas, the sun rises at 8.18 AM, and sunset isn’t before 5.27 PM. That’s no less than 9 hours, 9 minutes!
If I counted well, we haven’t gained an hour, but an hour and a half of sunlight! And in the coming days, every day another 4 minutes are added!
Dear son is on secondary school (junior high) since a few months, and he has to take his bicycle out at 7.30 for his 9 km (6 miles) ride to school. In the evening, he comes home before sunset, but I will be glad that, within a few weeks, he won’t have to leave before sunrise anymore!
(Yes, on secondary school already, but he still hopes we will eat the traditional ‘candlemas pancakes’ today!)

dagelijks 4 minuten extra, fijn zo!

here in Ireland our Pancake day is Shrove Tuesday the day before Ash Wednesday 17 Feb 2010.

@Ena Ronayne: I wrote about that two years ago, but at that time, I wasn’t translating my blogs in English yet. The last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is called ‘vette dinsdag’ (fat Tuesday, like Mardi gras in French), probably for the same reason: the day that the last butter, eggs… etc were used, before the period of fasting started.

It is great to see the extra light. Slowly but surely the days are lengthening 🙂 I imagine that you will be relieved when your son travels to school in daylight.
