I enjoyed your post Anne – forever fighting a battle against hairy bittercress at the allotment – did not realise that it’s edible. Will have to try munching some instead of weeding them out

A few days ago, I heard about those California milkmaid. I already wondered what kind of plant it was.
I have searched for some pictures now, and it looks like it has larger flowers that the bittercress, more like an other native here, the Cardamine pratense, Cuckooflower.

Interesting post Anne! On a walk down to one of our creeks on Sunday we found a cousin to your plant, Cardamine californica, commonly known here as Toothwort or California Milk Maids. It seemed to be blooming everywhere near the creek, in the company of Redwood Sorrel, and Trillium ovatum. The four-petaled flowers are quite charming, and a welcome early sign of spring. @moustache: in de eerste jaren groeide er vrij veel in de tuin, maar de laatste jaren moet ik er echt naar zoeken, en vind ik amper voldoende om te gebruiken in kruidenpannenkoeken of ‘pesto’… Van ‘overnemen’ is hier dus echt geen sprake.

Ik zou toch aanraden om het plantje wat in toom te houden. De hele rotstuin heeft hij overgenomen en is niet weg te krijgen…
