Slijmzwammen – Slime Molds

Een paar jaar geleden vond ik in mijn tuin al een mooie slijmzwam met de fantasierijke naam ‘heksenboter‘,  die in het Engels heel plastisch ‘Dog vomit slime mold’ heet. (Een ‘Witch’s butter’ kennen de Engelsen ook, maar dat is een echte zwam, geen slijmzwam.)

A few years ago, I found a beautiful slime mold in my garden, that is called ‘heksenboter’ (Witch’s butter) in Dutch, and ‘Dog vomit slime mold’ in English. (I know there is a ‘witch’s butter’ in English too, but that’s a fungus, not a slime mold.)

Een slijmzwam heeft dus niks met paddenstoelen te maken, maar dat legde ik al uit in mijn blogpostje over heksenboter.

Slime molds were historically classified as fungi, but today they belong to the class of true slime molds, Myxomycetes. In Dutch, I pointed to an earlier blogpost with a description of the live-cycle of slime molds, but at that time I wasn’t writing in English yet. So instead of trying to explain this not so simple matter in my imperfect English, I suggest you to take a look at this very good article on yet another slime mold, Leocarpus fragilis, on Curbstone Valley Farm’s Blog.

Die heksenboter heb ik sindsdien niet meer gezien in mijn tuin, en ook andere slijmzwammen zijn me niet meteen opgevallen. Maar in de afgelopen week kon ik er moeilijk naast kijken. In de – intussen alweer gemaaide – bloemenweide voor ons huis doken plots tientallen slijmzwammen op.

I didn’t see that Dog Vomit slime mold since, and neither did I find other slime mold. (But I do admit: I didn’t really look for them.)
But last week I couldn’t deny them: in the mowed flowermeadow in front of our house, there suddenly were dozens of slime molds.

Sommige waren bleekgeel, andere roomwit, maar het bleken allemaal exemplaren van dezelfde soort, het Groot kalkschuim (Mucilago crustacea). En zoals ik al vermoedde, bleken de verschillende kleuren ook verschillende stadia in de ontwikkeling van de slijmzwam te zijn.

Some were pale yellow, other creamy white, but it were all specimen of the same species, Mucilago crustacea. And like I already discovered before: we, Dutch-speaking people, seem to be more creative while inventing names for weird things in our language than the English-speaking folks are, since it does have a Dutch name, but no English one. In Dutch this is ‘Groot kalkschuim’, that might be translated as ‘Big chalky foam’.

Een eerste stadium in de ontwikkeling van het Groot kalkschuim bestaat uit dooiergele druppeltjes, maar dat stadium heb ik niet kunnen ontdekken.
Het vruchtlichaam van het Groot kalkschuim is vervolgens zachtgeel, met een oppervlak bedekt met kleine vingerachtige uitstulpinkjes. Binnenin bestaat zo’n slijmzwam uit buisvormige structuren die onderling verbonden zijn.

An early stage in the development of this slime mold consist of small drops the color of egg yolk, but I didn’t found them at the moment. The fruiting body of Mucilago crustacea that develops out of those drops is pale yellow and covered in tiny finger-like projections. Beneath the outer covering (the cortex), this slime mould contains a complex mass of tubules with cross-connections.

De zachtgele massa verbleekt in de loop van een dag tijd tot wit, en lijkt dan op een handvol gekookte mini-rijstkorrels

24 hours later, the pale yellow mass has faded to white and resembles a handfull of tiny cooked rice grains.

Stilaan rijpen binnenin de sporen, en die worden als een zwarte verkleuring zichtbaar aan de oppervlakte.

The spores within are maturing gradually, and become visible as a blackening of the slime molds surface.

Deze zwarte massa zal mettertijd afgebroken worden en de sporen worden door de regen verspreid.
Het feit dat deze slijmzwam zo massaal te vinden was, is allicht te wijten aan het ongewoon vochtige weer van de voorbije twee maanden.

These fruiting bodies with there blackened spore mass will eventually be broken up, and the spores dispersed, by rain.
‘Mucilago crustacea’ is not an uncommon slime mold, but it’s numerous appearance last week is probably due to the unusual humid weather we experienced in the last two months.
