Hamamelis

(to English text)

No blooming Witchhazel

A few weeks ago, a fellow garden-blogger mentioned on Facebook that in his region, there’s a really mild micro-climate.
And it seems to be true, because not only in his garden the witch-hazels are opening their first buds, but in her nearby garden Onderdeappelboom sees the same thing happening.

Not here in the Campine, were summers are warmer but winters are colder…
Until two years ago, our ‘Jelena’ always showed her first flowers between Christmas and New Year. However, in 2010 she was a month later, and was only opening the first buds around Candlemas. And this year there is no difference. The buds are still tightly closed, and the only color on the shrub is not the orange of the petals, but the yellow of Xanthoria parietina. (So strange that in English there is no name for this very common lichen. The Dutch name ‘groot dooiermos’ might be translated as ‘Large egg-yolk moss’.)

But don’t think I’m complaining about the weather: it’s sunny again, and that thin layer of frost gives the garden again a fairy appearance…
